I almost didn't start this one but I'm glad I did。 What it lacks in originality it makes up for in energy。 You can definitely feel the Kelley brothers' enthusiasm for their subject。 There are a few practical tips, lots of stories, and a clear passion for giving adults more creativity。 But。。。not really anything new if you keep up with popular trends in marketing/business/inspiring your employees。 I almost didn't start this one but I'm glad I did。 What it lacks in originality it makes up for in energy。 You can definitely feel the Kelley brothers' enthusiasm for their subject。 There are a few practical tips, lots of stories, and a clear passion for giving adults more creativity。 But。。。not really anything new if you keep up with popular trends in marketing/business/inspiring your employees。 。。。more

It’s just fine。 As someone working in a traditionally “creative” field I completely agree that creativity and design thinking should be democratized。 However this book really didn’t introduce any new ideas or challenge any assumptions for me。 Just felt very repetitive when the core thesis is really “anyone can be creative, just get motivated and start!”

A great book which explores the concept of Design thinking。 I read this book from start to end and i couldn’t put it down。 Being a student from Singapore university of Technology and Design, I was already exposed to design concepts, however there were still many things about design and how it can be used to solve problems as a startup or within an organisation and how as individuals we can bring about that change to a culture。 I never saw myself as a creative, but this book gave me the creative A great book which explores the concept of Design thinking。 I read this book from start to end and i couldn’t put it down。 Being a student from Singapore university of Technology and Design, I was already exposed to design concepts, however there were still many things about design and how it can be used to solve problems as a startup or within an organisation and how as individuals we can bring about that change to a culture。 I never saw myself as a creative, but this book gave me the creative confidence to pursue a new approach to problems。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

I feel like the title is completely misleading。 You won't get any creative confidence after reading this book。 If you're an aspiring designer, this book could be useful because it explores how design thinking works。 But if you're already familiar with the concept, there's nothing much to learn。 It's stuffed with outdated case studies that you don't care about。 The writing is boring and lifeless, which is ironic for a book that has the word "creative" in the title。 I feel like the title is completely misleading。 You won't get any creative confidence after reading this book。 If you're an aspiring designer, this book could be useful because it explores how design thinking works。 But if you're already familiar with the concept, there's nothing much to learn。 It's stuffed with outdated case studies that you don't care about。 The writing is boring and lifeless, which is ironic for a book that has the word "creative" in the title。 。。。more

Through a lot of useful tips, tricks and methodologies and a "taking you by the hand" aproach to the concepts proposed by some of the original fathers of theses ideas, the book works as a great introduction to design thinking and a way of looking at life through the lens of design。On the flip side, it has this very obvious purpose of advertising the d。school and all the other ventures by the Kelley brothers, and it sometimes gets in the way of being direct with whatever is being discussed。 Through a lot of useful tips, tricks and methodologies and a "taking you by the hand" aproach to the concepts proposed by some of the original fathers of theses ideas, the book works as a great introduction to design thinking and a way of looking at life through the lens of design。On the flip side, it has this very obvious purpose of advertising the d。school and all the other ventures by the Kelley brothers, and it sometimes gets in the way of being direct with whatever is being discussed。 。。。more

Decently written and chock full of examples, Creative Confidence is the quick read you need to get you out of the rut。 The book contains exercises to try, case studies to share, and an excitement that’s contagious。 Recommended for anyone looking for a way to break out of the same old way of doing things。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I must say that despite how much admire Tom and his brother and all of what IDEO represents, has done and is, his books (this is my third from him) seem to me like: “much ado about nothing” which is unfortunate as you expect a lot from him due to the background, and end up with 3 things which are cool but not worth all the pages。 So it’s good as long as you know is that what you get。
Patrick Silveira,

One of the things they teach you at any Product Design workshop is that products need to be desirable, and not just functional。 In that regard, it's only right for a book that set to convert you into a "design thinker" to spell desire。 And indeed, it does it well, right from the first touch - the free-form drawing of its cover, the lovely illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, the chromatic feel of the pages and the color images along the book (I have the hard-cover version)。With such h One of the things they teach you at any Product Design workshop is that products need to be desirable, and not just functional。 In that regard, it's only right for a book that set to convert you into a "design thinker" to spell desire。 And indeed, it does it well, right from the first touch - the free-form drawing of its cover, the lovely illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, the chromatic feel of the pages and the color images along the book (I have the hard-cover version)。With such high expectations set right from the beginning, it was a great discovery to find that the content of the book doesn't fail to deliver on the promise。 I have not approached this book as a newbie; I have been reading and watching about design thinking quite a lot during the last 5 years or so, and even had the fortune to take a 2-days workshop at the US Berkley Innovations, Creativity and Design Practice (ICDP) Center。 What else can this book teach me?Or so I thought。 Creative Confidence is a transformative book。 It shouldn't be read as a guide for understanding the "design thinking" methodology; in fact, while you will learn a lot about it, it doesn't try to teach it in a very process-oriented way。 If that's your goal, there are probably better books or workshops。 This book is about transforming you - the reader - or more accurately - help you to unleash the creativity muscle, that, so the authors claim, exist in us all。The book is fluent and fun and feels more like a journey or a memoir than as a "guidebook" and is written by the brothers Kelly of IDEO who are considered the fathers of design thinking; there's probably no one better to take a page from on this subject。 I can point to at least three distinct features this book provides, and it does it really great on each of them:1。 Inspiration - the book is rich with fascinating stories that are interweaved along the different chapters; the story of the GE engineer that designed an MRI for children as a pirates adventurous experiences, after realizing that children are afraid to undergo a scan; or how a regular university course at Stanford (at d。school) turned into an amazing project that saves thousands of babies a year in developed countries from dying due to premature birth and lack of incubators。 2。 Guidance - the book has almost a magical power to push you from your comfort zone and challenge you to think differently about things; through a mix of their 40-years personal experience and the wisdom of others, the Kellys preach to a new kind of thinking which is more problem-seeking than solution-oriented, practicing a growth mindset rather than a rigid "laser-focused" perspective and push you to "think like a traveller", "prototype and fail fast" and overall take more risks。 Through numerous examples they show how creativity is something that benefit organizations, NGOs or governments at all levels, up to the top。 You will start to look at things a little differently after reading the book。3。 Tools - lastly, the book provides a nice and useful set of tools, exercises and to-do-lists for different phases across the design process。 As I mentioned before, it is not a comprehensive guide or workshop but it does arm your arsenal with practices and ideas you can put to work quite right away。Summing it up , "Creative Confidence" is inspiring and fun; it will change the way you look at things and will ultimately make you a better person。 I can't think of a better superlative than that。 。。。more
Vivek Arun,
Reduced it by a star since I was already well versed with the whole idea of design thinking workshops (having conducted some myself)。 The whole book, in a way, is basically promoting IDEO’s famous design thinking approach to solving problems - user centric, empathy mapping, personas etc。 The book does a good job at introducing this to someone new to this field though。 Would recommend it to newbies。
